Red Deer Cervus elaphus

Identification: Large with thick-set neck. Unspotted red-brown fur, darker in winter, cream rump.
Information: Distribution: strongholds in Northern and south-west Scotland, Lake District, East Anglia, Cornwall and Devon. Scattered elsewhere in England and Wales. In Scotland in summer moves uphill to get away from biting insects, so not easy to see as the winter. A stag with large, branching antlers is an impressive site.
Similar species: Sika Deer.
