Blue-tailed Damselfly Ischnura elegans
Identification: Black top to the abdomen with a bright blue 8th segment. Males have blue or green sides to the thorax. Females and immatures are very variable, a few not even having a 'blue-tail'. Female rufescens, female violacea.
Information: Distribution: all of the British Isles. Late May to early August.
Similar species: Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly Ishnura pumilio has a restricted range along the south coasts of England and Wales. It has a blue 9th abdomen segment.
